CHICHAWATNI: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s Tufail Jutt won the bypolls in Chichawatni on Monday with 76,580 votes to his credit for the National Assembly seat NA-162, unofficial and unconfirmed results suggested.
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Rai Murtaza is at the second spot, grabbing 63,211 votes.
Pakistan People’s Party candidate Shahzad Saeed Cheema received 15,873 votes, taking the third spot.
Shortly after the unofficial results came in, the supporters of PML-N candidate in the constituency started celebrating.
Polling began at 8 AM and ended at 5 PM, without any break.
The counting of votes started shortly after the rather peaceful polling process came to an end.
Tough contest was already predicted between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Rai Mohammad Murtaza Iqbal, PML-N’s Chaudhry Mohammad Tufail Jat and PPP’s Shahzad Saeed Cheema.
Four independent candidates also contested for the seat in the by-elections.
The seat fell vacant after Rai Hassan Nawaz of the PTI was disqualified by an election tribunal for concealing assets, a decision that the Supreme Court later upheld.
He had clinched NA-162 seat in the 2013 parliamentary polls on the PTI ticket by bagging 88,974 votes as against 75,756 ballots of the runner-up, Haji Ayub, an independent.
The PML-N had not fielded any candidate in the constituency.
